Garden as habitat...

Life adapts and constantly thwarts our attempts to impose our will on it.

But achieving harmony with nature doesn't mean letting the garden go wild. It can be the preserving a mature tree that provides shade for your house and a habitat for birds rather than installing air-con...or the planting of a rain garden in a boggy corner of the yard instead of costly remedial work...it is the simple understanding that we are not above nature and it is much easier to work with it than to fight it.

Our gardens are habitat to more animals and organisms than we like to think about...and all play a role in a healthy ecosystem. Insects pollinate, shred organic matter, and loosen the soil...bacteria and fungi break down wastes, and help plants utilize nutrients, access water, and fight off pathogens...and everything is food for something else.

The adage "as above, so below" is visually depicted through the structure of plants. The branch structure that we see permeating the sky is reflected in the root structure permeating the earth. Healthy leaves and flowers mean healthy roots...and healthy roots require a healthy environment.

My Urban Garden strives to complete all maintenance and project work in as ecologically and unobtrusively a manner as possible. Aesthetic desires are met, but not at the direct expense of the landscape itself.

One of the most delightful things about a garden is the anticipation it provides...
