Ecological Land Care

Ecological Land Care is the design, installation and maintenance of landscapes so as to promote and sustain environmental health, both above and below ground.

It arises from the understanding that all organisms in nature are interdependent, and that healthy plants are the result of a healthy ecosystem.

Ecological Land Care goes beyond the use of organic fertilizers, and beyond such independent practices as perma-culture and Integrated Pest Management (IPM). It acknowledges the idea of intrinsic soil health, and utilizes aspects of several schools of thought to create an environment that supports all its inhabitants naturally.

My Urban Garden takes a holistic and ecological approach in the care of plants gardens, and ecosystems. No synthetic chemicals are used...only applications of organic matter, fertilizing compost teas, as-needed EM (Effective Microorganism) treatments, and inoculations of mycorrhizal fungi. If a formulated fertilizer is required, only a high quality natural and organic blend is used.

Ecological Garden Care...

Organic matter is essential for a healthy landscape. Falling leaves are nature's way of providing organic matter, and there are many ways to mulch them aesthetically. If the pristine look is demanded and the leaves must go, it simply means that the organic matter must be replenished by some some other means...such as compost...but annual amendments with organic matter of some kind is key in the maintenance of any My Urban Garden property.

Soil is never turned or 'fluffed', although a light surface raking is performed to achieve a similar appearance.

Ecological Container Care...

All container plantings are temporary by nature, and thus by design...whether an annual display repeated, or a perennial display that must have its root mass trimmed occasionally. Soils are custom blended and amended at time of planting to optimize nutritional needs for the duration of the planting.

Clinoptilolite Zeolites are used to reduce watering and fertilizing requirements by up to 25%, and a nutritionally-rich decorative sea-soil mulch is applied to further reduce the need for additional fertilizing.

We descended into the garden and caught three hundred slugs...

...how I love the mixture of the beautiful and the squalid in gardening. It makes it so life-like.
